On January 3rd, 2012, Cinder, the first book of The Lunar Chronicles, was published for all of the world to see. It’s a beautiful book written by Marissa Meyer that makes readers think, “Why didn’t I read this sooner?” Marissa Meyer uses her storytelling magic to create a futuristic fairy tale starring sixteen-year-old Linh Cinder, a cyborg and mechanic.
This story takes place in a city called New Beijing, where Cinder lives with her stepmother and stepsisters. With her ability to download blueprints of mechanical objects, Cinder easily becomes the best mechanic and attracts many customers, including Prince Kai, the prince of the Eastern Commonwealth.
In the book, a drastic plague is spreading and playing an active role in Cinder’s everyday life. When her cruel guardian volunteers her for the plague’s research to find a cure, it’s supposed to be an honor, an honor that no cyborg test subject has survived. Cinder’s life is turned upside down in a matter of days because of the prince, her younger step sister’s sickness, and the cyborg draft.
Marissa Meyer’s website says that Marissa Meyer wrote the first draft of Cinder in twenty days, dropped it for a little bit, and then worked on it again. Marissa Meyer has always loved fairy tales and that has probably encouraged her to write The Lunar Chronicles based off of fairy tales. A website that goes by the name of GoodReads gives people the opportunity to review Cinder and put their opinions on it.
