On January 20th, Southwest Airlines flew 62 cats and dogs from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Baltimore, Maryland, but why? Due to the recent hurricane, Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico needs to recover, according to Dallas News. Southwest Airlines decided to fly out there and help these furry friends.
It took months to coordinate and plan this furry event. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue of Arlington, Virginia, teamed up with Puerto Rican Animal Rescue Group PR Animals. They also teamed up with staff members from Friendship Hospital for Animals, and of course, Southwest Airlines.
Then, they flew off to get their new four-legged, furry friends. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be coming through the cabin shortly to get you some drinks,” said the flight attendant to the volunteers and media members, “and say hi to the puppies.”
When the special passengers arrived, they were transported to Gaithersburg, Maryland and put up for adoption, where most soon found their forever-homes.
“We are incredibly grateful to Southwest for partnering with us to make this flight a reality,” said Mirah Harowitz, from Lucky Dog. “This flight literally saves lives - both of the animals who are transported to D.C. as well as those who remain on the island and need the supplies we’re bringing,” she said. Harowitz told Dallas News,”This couldn’t have worked out better.”
