Shocking That We’ve Had No Snow: Look At the Facts

Have you been hoping for snow? Colorado Springs has snow most winters, but for the 2017 and 2018 winters, we’ve all been asking the same question: Where’s the snow? Snow is caused by solid ice crystals in the air that collide and stick together, and when too many of them stick together, the crystals become too heavy, turn into snowflakes, and fall to the ground.

On March 23, 2016 a large snow storm hit Denver and Colorado Springs, and snow measurements went up to 19.3 inches of snow. On average, Colorado Springs gets 36-48 inches of snow a year. Even in Houston, Texas, it snowed three times in the 2017-2018 winter, which is the second time it has snowed three times in one winter. Snow mainly falls from late October to late April in Colorado, and snow is surprisingly, heavier and has more moisture in spring than in winter.

Recently, Ms. DeHoyos shared her thoughts on the topic; “Weather patterns are affected by el nino or la nina,” she said. This basically means that the fact we’re having a la nina year is playing a role in our snow issues. Ms. DeHoyos also mentioned that global warming is part of the reason we’re not getting any snow. “That’s why we get fires-global warming,” she said.

So, I hope your questions about our snow problems have been answered.
